24 Jul 2015

Local Government NSW Water Management Conference is fast approaching. The conference provides an annual forum for robust discussion on urban water supply and sewerage as well as broader water management issues.

Co-hosted by Wingecarribee Shire Council and Local Government NSW, the 2015 Conference will be held from Monday 24 – Wednesday 26 August at Peppers Craigieburn, Bowral. Registrations for the Conference can be completed on the LGNSW website.

This year's conference will focus on the following key themes:

  • Innovative operational practice of council water utilities and will showcase examples from Wingecarribee Shire Council such as an in-situ demonstration of ice pigging – cleaning drinking water pipes with slush ice – and sophisticated pressure management and leak detection.
  • The impacts and challenges related to drinking water catchment protection requirements with an explanation of Wingecarribee Shire Council’s sewerage strategy dealing with Water NSW’s stringent catchment protection requirement and showcase related facilities such as the Robertson Sewerage Treatment Plant 2000EP with its unique membrane filtration.
  • The challenges of water transfer schemes including the Shoalhaven Water Scheme, the Goulburn Water Supply Pipeline and the recently completed Macquarie River to Orange Pipeline. A site tour to Wingecarribee Dam plus an examination of parts of Shoalhaven Water's infrastructure will be included.
  • Water recycling and its growing importance as a sustainable way of providing water supply in regional NSW including a presentation by the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence on the latest developments in promoting direct potable reuse both in Australia and internationally.

In addition, to the main themes, speeches will address various other issues, including the impact on water supplies due to coal seam gas activities, interaction between private water services (e.g. FlowSystems) and local water utilities, trialling health based targets, and implementing of quality management systems for drinking water.

Details about the Conference, including a draft program, are available on the LGNSW website
