Hi all, I'm looking into repairing vs replacing a leaking 100kL concrete reservoir approaching 50 years of age. The reservoir services a rural community (approx. 30 service connections) with drinking water. In terms of options for replacement, I would like to know what other LWUs are doing when replacing small, rural water reservoirs. I'm aware of steel panel tanks as a potential cost-effective alternative to concrete, but are there any LWUs out there using poly tanks for this type of application? Would also like to understand any reasoning for preferred types of tanks for this scenario.

Thanks,

Hi Sonya, I'm not sure if there are poly tanks available larger than about 50kL, meaning you would need two tanks at least to match your existing 100kL tank. Poly generally will have a shorter design life than steel due to sunlight exposure, and isn't fire resistant if your site might be exposed to grass fires or bushfires. If you do specify a steel tank you should ensure it has a food grade liner for a potable water application. Cheers, Brendan Guiney | Executive Officer | Water Directorate
